Here is a photograph of a fairly typical Seattle house. I imagine it was built as a speculative house by a production builder in the early 20th century (please correct me if you know better). I think that it is a great combination of Four Square efficiency and tasteful classical detailing. The sober colors and the tightly spaced siding works well with the corbels, corner pilasters, and simple porch columns. The bell cast eave and the shallowness of the porch roof is very satisfying. Windows are the very economical one over one double hung. This is one of those houses that is just simple enough...and just ornamented enough to have a strong aesthetic effect, at least to my eyes. Any thoughts? Other examples?
